Bob Sampson - Tobacco Shed Pottery Nancy Sampson - Tobacco Shed Pottery

Nancy and Bob Sampson have been making wheel-thrown stoneware pottery for 30 years. Prior to this time, they created paintings using weathered tobacco shed boards as a canvas - hence the name of the business. Gradually this business evolved into memorabelia boxes and it was at the suggestion of one of the shops who featured these products that they try a hand at pottery.

After classes and many hours of practice, the Tobacco Shed Pottery was launched in 1973. Over the years, Nancy and Bob have introduced several lines, including blue and white spongeware, yellowware, sea-weed mochaware, and yellow spongeware, both in full size and miniatures in two scales (1" to the foot, 2" to the foot). Each of these types of pottery had their origin in either England or the United States in the 19th century.

For many years, all of the pottery was thrown on the potters wheel by Nancy, with Bob taking on the tasks of glaze mixing, kiln management and shipping. Now Bob has added slab platters and trivets to their line. They glaze each pot by hand, after which Nancy decorates the ware.

Starting with a lump of stoneware clay, each piece of Tobacco Shed Pottery is hand made. Following a natural drying process, the pots are fired for the low bisque firing, glazed, decorated and high fired to over 2000 F. All pieces are lead free and dishwasher and micro-wave safe.

Tobacco Shed Pottery is available in shops across the country, at retail shows (see Show Schedule) and through direct sales. Featured articles have been in Yankee, Country Home, Country Living and Early American Life. Nancy and Bob are also featured in the book, Old Masters of New England, by Chase Reynolds Ewald and have been listed in Early American Life Directory of Traditional Crafts.
